At an elevation of 2330', Rosamond is considered a high desert community in the Antelope Valley. The Edwards Air Force Base, famous for aerospace research and development, is located adjacent to Rosamond's east side. Rosamond was officially established in 1877, and was named after the daughter of an official of the Southern Pacific Railroad, the town site owner. Mining and cattle were prime industries in the early days. In the late 1890's, the Lida Mine (later Tropico Mine) opened. When miners struck pay dirt several years later, the hills were crawling with miners. Assays on the ore went as high as $100,000 per ton. In the 1930's, when mining again boomed, and the Army Air Corps established Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards AFB), the community was able to add street lights and a water plant. Today, Rosamond's prime industries are mining, ranching, and aerospace. Edwards AFB and AF Plant 42 at Palmdale provide local aerospace employment. In addition, the town is home to numerous commuters who leave home early each weekday to travel to the Los Angeles area for work and return at night. Rosamond is an unincorporated town with a population of approximately 20,000. The Antelope Valley in which it is located, is a desert and a part of the Great Mojave Desert of southeastern California. Daytime temperatures are usually over 100 degrees F during summer months, although evenings usually cool nicely after sunset. During winter months, daytime temperatures may only reach the 20's or 30's with occasional snowfall. Rosamond is governed by the Board of Supervisors, located at the county seat of Bakersfield, 70 miles away. Lancaster and Palmdale, Los Angeles county cities of over 100,000 each, are located 15-20 miles to the south. Downtown Los Angeles is located 85 miles to the south, but is separated from the Antelope Valley by the San Gabriel Mountains.
